Monkey Mountain is a part of the Jackson County Parks system. Located between Grain Valley and Oak Grove Missouri, this is basically a primative area, with a horse trail, but mostly bushwacking. This location was broken into two events, one in the spring, and one in the fall.
The cache is located on Monkey Mountain. The initial climb up the hill is the only physically challenging area.
Cache is a well marked ammo can with official geocache stickers on the outside. Follow this link for more history on Monkey Mountain and how it got its name
According to legend, Monkey Mountain was given its name after a circus train derailed a hundred years ago and its load of monkeys escaped into the woods. But in all the time since then no one has ever found any monkeys or any evidence of a train wreck. Is it just a yarn spun by the local old timers... or has no one looked in the right place?
See if you find find the train wreck and rescue a monkey!
The cache can be approached from either lot. Do not attempt to approach from the east, however, as there is no way to do so without trespassing on private property. There are two large farmed fields that are within park boundaries. If the route you choose takes you to any of them and you cannot find an obvious trail through, please walk along the edge of the field rather than cutting through the crops.
The railroad is outside park boundaries and should not be approached. However the old barn near the cache location is on park land, so if you see it don't worry-- you haven't strayed onto private property. (It looked a little rickety to me, so probably best to stay away from it.)
To Claim Your Find: Simply spotting the container is not enough to count as a find. You must sign the physical log book and return the cache securely to its position for a find to count. Finds listed online that later cannot be matched up with log book entries will be deleted.
The new location is not very far from the old location. A little higher in altitude and a different terrain but still not too hard to get to. There are some impressive views here, though the area can get a little noisy on weekend afternoons. This was one of the first areas of the park I explored when I first started coming here several years ago.
